Paget's Disease
Paget's disease of bone is a chronic skeleton disease. A process known as remodeling removes old bone fragments and replaces them with new fresh bone in a healthy state. Paget's disease causes this process to become out of balance, resulting in atypically shaped weak and brittle new bone. Paget's disease primarily affects the elderly affecting the population over the age of 50.
Description:
Paget's disease of bone is a chronic (long-term) disorder in which bones grow larger and weaker than normal. Paget's disease can affect one or more bones (monostotic or polyostotic). Many patients with Paget's disease have no symptoms and are unaware of their condition until X-rays are taken for another reason. Paget's disease most commonly affects the following bones: • Skull and pelvis. • Spine. • The femur and tibia are the leg bones. Many people with Paget's disease do not exhibit disease-specific symptoms. However, bone changes can result in: • Bone ache. • Bones that are distorted. • Fractures (broken bones). • Inflammation and arthritis in joints near the affected bones. Many people can manage their symptoms, improve their pain, and control the effects of the disease with treatment.
Cause:
The precise causes of Paget's disease remain unknown. There are some known risk factors for Paget's disease that you should be aware of: Genetics: If a close family member has Paget's disease, you are more likely to develop it. Ethnic origin: People from England Scotland Central Europe Greece and countries settled by European migrants such as Australia and New Zealand are more likely to have it. Preceding illness: If you have previously been infected with measles respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or paramyxovirus, you are at a higher risk. Environmental exposures: Being exposed to wood fire heating as a child may increase your risk. Age: As you get older, your chances of developing Paget's disease increase.
Symptom:
Symptoms may arise depending on the affected bone and may include: • Headaches and hearing loss occur when Paget's disease affects the skull. • Tingling and numbness in the arms and legs occur due to swollen vertebrae exerting on the nerves in the spine. • Hip pain which can occur when Paget's disease affects the pelvis or thighbone. • Other medical problems such as: • Arthritis can be caused by damage to joint cartilage. • Hearing loss can be caused by changes in the skull and ear bones. The additional workload of circulating blood throughout the body can lead to cardiac failure in some people who already have heart disease and severe Paget's disease.
