Ayurveda

Sweat is good for you. It helps open up skin pores and eliminate toxins such as urea. If your day-to-day routine doesn't involve —physical activity, you might need this treatment to break a sweat. The term "Patra Pind" refers to the herbal poultice, and "Swedanam" means "sweating. Patra pinda swedanam or 'elakizhi' therapy induces perspiration by massaging the body with a bundle of herbs packed in a muslin cloth and soaked in warm oil. Ayurvedic treatments may seem out of the ordinary, but they bring out exemplary outcomes, one such remarkable procedure is the Patra potli swedanam. The treatment helps relieve stress, sore muscles, and body aches.

How it Works

Herbal Poultice Preparation: A variety of herbs are plucked, cleaned, processed, and then wrapped in a cloth to form a poultice or called a 'potli'. These herbs are carefully selected based on their therapeutic properties and the specific condition being treated.

Heating: The poultice is then heated, often by placing it on a hot plate filled with medicated oil.

Application: The heated poultice is applied to the affected area of the body through gentle taps.

Sweating: The heat from the poultice causes the body to sweat, which is believed to help detoxify the body and promote healing.

Pain relief: Helps alleviate pain and discomfort in muscles and joints.

Inflammation reduction: Can reduce inflammation and swelling.

Improved circulation: Promotes better blood flow to the affected area.

The answer lies in its mode of action. By pacifying the vitiated doshas ( vata, pitta, and kapha), this method of treatment alleviates the symptoms of conditions like rigidity, pain, and stiffness. This treatment can be very helpful for people with arthritis, back problems, and body aches. However, it's important to be careful because it may not be safe for people with high blood pressure, fractures or dislocations, varicose veins, or severe inflammation.
