
Tendonitis
Tendons are strong connective tissue bands that connect muscle to bone. Tendonitis develops when those connective tissues become inflamed and irritated. Tendonitis occurs when the tendon swells and becomes painful following an injury to the tendon.
Overview
Tendonitis can occur in any of the tendons in the body but is more likely in Shoulders Elbows Wrists Knees Achilles tendons (back of the heels) referred to as Achilles tendonitis Hips Base of the thumbs known as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis (thumb tendonitis). Causes
Repetitive motion: Particularly among those who actively participate in sports and those who are working in jobs that require repetitive motions such as gardening or painting are at a high risk of developing tendonitis.Incorrect technique or overuse: Tendonitis can be caused by the wrong approach adopted when playing sports or performing other movements.
Medical conditions: Such as arthritis can place strain on your tendons resulting in tendonitis.
Symptoms
Tendonitis is characterized by quick pain and inflammation. However, in some instances symptoms appear gradually often following a period of excessive physical activity. The following are the most common tendonitis symptoms:
• Tendon enlargement
• Tenderness over the region of tendon
• Pain while moving
• Cracking or rubbing sensation in the joint.
• A bony prominence or bulge in the tendon
• Swelling and stiffness.
Ayurvedic View
Snayu gata vata, kandara gata vata dushti- it's a condition where prakupita (aggravated) vata dosha affects tendon (which connect muscle to bone) or due to aaghata (injury) that tendon gets, results in adika shoola (severe pain), aankunchana prasarana kashta chesta (pain and restrictions while extension and flexion movements) of the affected area, this is tendonitis. Ayurveda way of approach is to bring dosha back to prakruta awastha (balance state), reduce the symptoms, bring back normal and complete range of movement of the affected area, nourish the dhatus (strengthen tissue) by ayurvedic panchakarma treatment.
