Cholelithiasis

Kidney stones are most likely the first – and possibly only – thing that comes to mind when we think of stones in the body. What you may not know is that stones can also form in the body's other organs. Cholelithiasis (gallstones) refers to the calculus or stone that forms within the gall bladder as a result of crystal deposition.

Description:

Bile is stored in the hollow pear-shaped gall bladder also known as the cholecystic before being emptied into the small intestine. It collects bile from the liver and transports it via the common hepatic duct to the duodenum the first part of the small intestine. This helps the bile then break down the fats. Cholelithiasis (gallstones) refers to a calculus or stone that forms inside the gall bladder as a result of crystal deposition. Choledocholithiasis is a disorder that develops when a few stones exit the gall bladder and block the bile duct.

Cause:

Gallstones are caused by increased cholesterol secretion with risk factors including obesity rapid weight loss pregnancy impaired gallbladder emptying fasting spinal cord injury and reduced bile salt secretion.

Symptom:

Gallstones, also known as biliary colic, are sudden severe pains that mostly affect the upper right side of the abdomen. This could persist for a few minutes or several hours. Other symptoms include nausea and vomiting, fever, jaundice, and skin irritation. Referred pain can occasionally be felt on the right shoulder or in the area between the shoulder blades.
