Post Menopausal Syndrome
Postmenopausal syndrome refers to physical and emotional symptoms that occur after menopause.
Overview
Postmenopausal Syndrome refers to the collection of symptoms and health changes that can persist or emerge after a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period—marking the end of menopause and the beginning of postmenopause.
Causes
Estrogen Deficiency - A condition characterised by insufficient levels of estrogen, which can lead to various symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness.
Progesterone Deficiency
Ovarian Failure - Refers to the cessation of ovarian function, which can occur naturally during menopause or be the result of surgical procedures such as oophorectomy (ovary removal). This leads to a drop in hormone levels and a range of symptoms linked to estrogen and progesterone reduction.
Ageing-Related Hormonal Change - As individuals age, natural changes in hormone production can occur, particularly in women experiencing menopause. These changes can affect metabolism, mood, and overall health.
Symptoms
Hot Flashes - Sudden feelings of intense heat that can spread throughout the body, often accompanied by sweating and flushing.
Night Sweats - Episodes of excessive sweating during sleep, which can lead to interrupted rest and discomfort.
Vaginal Dryness and Irritation - A decrease in estrogen can lead to thinning and dryness of vaginal tissues, resulting in discomfort, irritation, or pain during intercourse.
Mood Swings, Depression, and Anxiety - Hormonal changes during menopause can contribute to emotional instability, increased anxiety, and a heightened risk of depression.
Sleep Disturbances - Insomnia or disruptions in sleep patterns are common, often exacerbated by night sweats and anxiety.
Decreased Libido - A reduction in sexual desire can occur, influenced by hormonal shifts, vaginal dryness, or other physical and emotional factors.
Bone Density Loss (Osteoporosis) -As estrogen levels decrease, the risk of bone density loss increases, making bones weaker and more susceptible to fractures.
Ayurvedic View
Aartava kshaya - Due to aggravated vata dosha in artava srotas, leading to shoshana(depletion)of dhatus, namely rasa, rakta and this vata, along with pitta dosha, leads to symptoms of post menopausal syndrome. Ayurveda's way of approach is to bring dosha back to balance, rejuvenate the tissues and reduce the symptoms by ayurvedic panchakarma treatment and treatment done to the yoni(female reproductive organ)so as to reduce the symptoms of ageing on female reproductive health.
