Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy, a common microvascular complication of diabetes, is the leading cause of visual loss. Diabetic retinopathy can cause retinal damage that could potentially result in blindness.
Description:
Uncontrolled diabetes can cause eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. The risk is influenced by age, diabetes duration, poor glycemic control, and blood pressure fluctuations. Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) is an early stage where tiny blood vessels leak, making the retina swell. When the macula swells, it is called macular edema. while proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) occurs when the retina grows new blood vessels, leading to neovascularization and macular edema.
Cause:
High blood sugar levels damage retinal blood vessels, leading to vision problems. Risk factors include longer years of diabetes, poorly controlled blood sugar, high blood pressure, pregnancy, high cholesterol, obesity, tobacco use, and anemia.
Symptoms:
Symptoms like eye floaters and blurriness are characteristic; common symptoms include black spots in vision, central vision loss, and, in rare cases may present with blindness.
