Tonsilitis
Tonsilitis is an infectious condition leading to inflammation of the tonsils, resulting in pain in the upper part of the throat that can be either acute or chronic.
Description:
Tonsil swelling, caused by infection, is a contagious condition affecting soft tissue masses on either side of the throat, primarily caused by viruses and bacteria. The tonsils, the immune system's first line of defense against bacteria and viruses, are particularly vulnerable to infection and inflammation.
Cause:
Common causes are viral or bacterial infections. It spreads through direct contact, droplets from sneezing or coughing, contamination of surfaces, shared food and water, and oral sex. Risk factors include age and close contact with the infected person. Streptococcus pyogenes is the most common bacterium causing tonsillitis.
Symptoms:
symptoms include inflamed and swollen tonsils, throat pain, fever, red tonsils, white or yellow patches on the tonsils, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, swollen lymph nodes on the sides of the neck, stiff neck, fever, bad breath, and headache. In children, symptoms may include stomach upset, vomiting, stomach pain, drooling, and not wanting to eat or swallow.
