Dhoomapanam

Ayurveda

Dhoomapanam is a Sanskrit term that refers to the practice of inhaling herbal smoke for therapeutic purposes.

How dhoomapana is performed

Prepare the Substance: Gather the desired herbs or medicinal preparation and grind it into a fine powder.

Create the Incense: Mix the powder with a binding agent like ghee or honey and shape it into cones or incense sticks or make a varthi using a cloth.

Light the Incense: Light one end of the incense stick or cone and allow it to smolder.

Inhale the Smoke: Gently inhale the smoke through the nostrils and exhale it through the mouth.

The duration and frequency of dhoomapana will vary depending on the specific condition being treated and the individual's needs. It targets deep-seated organs like the head and neck, drying up excess Kapha Dosha, fluids, phlegm, wound secretions, and natural body secretions.
