Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a serious sleep disorder characterized by repeated stops and starts of breathing, resulting in loud snoring and fatigue even after a full night's sleep.

Overview


Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, the most common type, occurs when there is a functional obstruction in the mouth and throat. It can also cause episodes of slow and shallow breathing, known as hypopnea. It is classified into mild, moderate, and severe episodes.



Causes


Sleep apnea is caused by factors such as being 

  • Overweight

  • Having a narrow airway

  • Having enlarged tonsils

  • Having adenoids. 

Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain fails to send signals to the respiratory muscles, causing shortness of breath and difficulty getting or staying asleep. 



Symptoms
  • Loud snoring

  • Episodes of stopping breathing

  • Gasping for air

  • Morning headaches

  • Insomnia

  • Hypersomnia

  • Difficulty paying attention 

  • Irritability 

  • Fatigue 

  • Daytime sleepiness 

  • Mood changes 

  • Brain function disruptions 

  • Sexual dysfunction and headaches. 

  • Children may experience hyperactivity, loud snoring, bedwetting, and sleeping in unusual positions.
