Myositis

Myositis like many other rare diseases is a complicated illness that is frequently misdiagnosed. Each patient presents differently complicating the diagnostic process. Discover more about the various types of myositis.

Overview


Myositis is a muscle-related inflammatory condition. Myositis comes in a variety of forms the majority of which are highly treatable. The primary focus of Myositis Support and Understanding is a diverse group of rare autoimmune muscle diseases known as idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) or acquired myopathies which are caused by the immune system attacking our own muscles connective tissue blood vessels lungs skin and/or other organs of the body. 


The major type of myositis characterized is:


Dermatomyositis is typically characterized by a bluish-purple rash on the eyelids or a red rash over the neck, shoulders, upper chest, or knuckles. It also weakens muscles.

Polymyositis causes muscle weakness without a rash. It can also affect the lungs making breathing difficult. 

Inclusion body myositis over 50 is more likely to develop inclusion body myositis. It may go undiagnosed for a long time before the symptoms of muscle weakness manifest. 

Juvenile myositis affects children aged 5 to 15. It frequently results in a rash, fatigue, and muscle weakness. This muscle disorder is referred to as myopathy. 

Inflammatory myopathies are a group of diseases characterized by chronic muscle inflammation and weakness. Myositis is another term for chronic inflammation of muscle tissue.



Causes


A viral infection alcohol or certain medications such as statins can all cause myositis. It could also be caused by an autoimmune disease. The following are the most common types of autoimmune myositis:



Symptoms


Myositis symptoms typically include Muscle Weakness: It affects several muscle groups and makes daily activities difficult. It can cause muscle pain ranging from mild to severe. This pain can last for a long time and have a significant impact on one's quality of life. Muscle stiffness can make it difficult to move and perform daily activities. It is frequently associated with muscle weakness. Dermatomyositis is associated with skin rashes which can vary in appearance and severity and can serve as useful diagnostic indicators. Joint Pain: Some people with myositis experience joint pain which can be mistaken for other conditions such as arthritis. Fatigue: Muscle weakness and pain frequently cause fatigue which can interfere with daily functioning.
