Muscular Dystrophy

A class of hereditary illnesses known as muscular dystrophy results in a progressive weakening of the muscles in the body. While the symptoms of some forms of muscular dystrophy manifest in early childhood, those of other types do not manifest until adulthood. The type of muscular dystrophy may also have an impact on different muscle groups.

Description:

Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of conditions that gradually damage and weaken your muscles. Though they can happen at any age, the majority of diagnoses happen in children. There are nine main variations of muscular dystrophy. The muscles impacted by each type vary as do the onset age and progression rate. The following are named after the affected muscles: Becker muscular dystrophy: is common in teenagers and young adults. The symptoms are similar to those of Duchenne, but they are less severe and progressive. Survival continues into middle age. Congenital: Occurs in birth Symptoms include general muscle weakness and potential joint deformities. The disease progresses slowly. It causes a shorter life span. Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Most Prevelant types that occur between ages 2-6 symptoms include muscle weakness and wasting. It affects the upper arms upper legs and pelvis. It eventually encompasses all of the voluntary muscles. People rarely live past their 20s. Prevalent among  boys and rarely affects women who have much milder symptoms and a better prognosis. Distal: Affects Ages between 40 to 60. Involves  weakness and wasting of muscles of the upper and lower limbs. Progress is slow & rarely causes total disability. Emery-Dreifuss : common among childhood to the early teens. Involves the  shoulder upper arm and shin muscles. Joint deformities are common. Slowly progressive. Cardiac problems can lead to sudden death. Facioscapulohumeral : Childhood to early adulthood. Presents with facial muscle weakness as well as wasting of the shoulders and upper arms. Progress is slow with periods of rapid deterioration. Life expectancy may be many decades after onset. Limb-Girdle : Late childhood through middle age.Involves the  shoulder and pelvic girdles first. Progress is slow. Cardiopulmonary complications are usually the cause of death. Myotonic : Ages 20 to 40 .weakness in all muscle groups and delayed muscle relaxation following contraction. It primarily affects the face feet hands and neck. Progression is slow, sometimes lasting 50 to 60 years. The infantile form causes more serious problems. Oculopharyngeal: Ages: 40 to 70. This results in a weakening of the muscles that control the throat and eyelids. Over time  leads to difficulty swallowing and significant weight loss due to a lack of food. Progress is slow.

Cause:

Muscle dystrophy is caused by genetic differences. Muscle integrity is determined by proteins that are produced by thousands of genes. Each of the 23 pairs of chromosomes that make up an individual's genome is inherited in half from their biological parent. These chromosomal pairs have one sex-linked pair. The remaining 22 pairs, also referred to as autosomal chromosomes, are not sex-linked. A crucial protein called dystrophin can become deficient due to a mutation in a single gene. Dystrophin may not be produced by the body in sufficient amounts.

Symptom:

Different muscle groups throughout the body will be affected by different types of muscular dystrophy, and symptoms can start to appear at different ages. Symptoms could include: • Progressive atrophy and weakening of the muscles • Waddling style of walking • Having trouble climbing stairs • Difficulty getting up after sitting or lying down Frequent Falls • Curving of the spine • Wasting of thigh muscles • Abnormal enlargement of calves • Trouble breathing or swallowing • Limbs draw inward and become fixed in place. • Cardiac enlargement
