Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is an infection of the lining of the tubes that transport air to the lungs. We refer to these tubes as bronchi. The inflammation produces more mucus and hinders normal airflow into and out of the lungs.

Overview


Both acute and chronic bronchitis are possible:


Acute bronchitis:  A cold or other respiratory illness can cause acute bronchitis. The duration of symptoms is shorter than three weeksTrusted Source, and they frequently go away in a few days with no long-term consequences.


Chronic bronchitis:  When symptoms, mainly productive cough, persist for more than three months over the course of two years, bronchitis is categorized as chronic. Excessive amounts of sticky mucus accumulate in the airways due to the ongoing inflammation in the lining of the bronchial tubes, which limits the quantity of airflow into and out of the lungs.

Causes 


Chronic bronchitis can be caused by:


Infections: The early inflammation and swelling that cause acute bronchitis are usually caused by infections.

Tobacco use: The biggest risk factor for chronic bronchitis is smoking. More than 90% of those who have the illness have smoked at some point in their lives.

Passive Smoking:  Additionally, secondhand smoking exposure can raise a person's risk of chronic bronchitis.
