Cellulitis
Cellulitis is a bacterial infection affecting the skin and the underlying tissue. This condition occurs when the integrity of the skin barrier is compromised, making it more prevalent among individuals with weakened immune systems.
Overview
Cellulitis is a bacterial infection characterised by the inflammation of the skin and the deeper tissues beneath it. This condition generally arises when bacteria, such as Streptococcus or Staphylococcus, infiltrate the skin through an open wound. Such wounds may occur as a result of cuts, scrapes, insect bites, or surgical procedures.
Staphylococcus and Streptococcus (commonly referred to as strep) bacteria can penetrate the skin and lead to the onset of cellulitis. This condition frequently arises from skin injuries, including cuts, insect bites, and surgical wounds.
Causes
Several risk factors contribute to the development of cellulitis, such as:
- Pre-existing skin conditions, including eczema or athlete’s foot

- Co-morbid conditions, notably diabetes and obesity
