Conjunctivitis (Red Eye)
Conjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition of the conjunctiva due to infection or allergic reactions. It is also called pink eye due to the redness of the conjunctiva.
Description:
Conjunctivitis is a common eye disease, affecting the outer white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelid along with the eyeball. It can cause pain, burning sensations, scratchiness, itchiness, increased tears, and swelling. Acute cases are common in infants, school-age children, and the elderly. Treatments can ease discomfort, but early diagnosis and good hygiene are crucial to limiting its spread.
Cause:
Viral infections like adenovirus, herpes simplex virus, and varicella-zoster virus or coronavirus, bacterial infections such as Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumonia, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, allergens like pollen, insects, irritating materials like lenses, dirt, chemicals, or cosmetic products, STIs, or autoimmune conditions, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), foreign objects, blocked tear ducts in babies, and rare autoimmune conditions can all cause inflammation in the conjunctiva.
Symptoms:
The symptoms include crusting yellow discharge from the eyes at night that may or may not hinder eyes from opening in the morning, redness, swollen eyelids, itching, a scratchy feeling, constant tearing, and photophobia in one or both eyes.
