Cluster Headache
A rare but extremely painful kind of headache known as a cluster headache occurs when headaches are felt in groups or clusters. They typically begin between the ages of 20 and 40 and are more prevalent in men. After a few weeks, those who get them report having frequent headaches followed by a period without any. This is known as 'episodic cluster headache'.
Description:
Headaches can strike as often as eight times a day during a cluster. They have the ability to rouse you from sleep and frequently begin at night or in the early morning. These clusters frequently happen annually at the same time. Some experience headaches that don't go away for extended periods of time. We refer to this as "chronic cluster headache. Although quite unpleasant cluster headaches are not harmful. Cluster headache is a type that has a cyclic pattern or cluster period and causes excruciating pain in or around one eye on one side of the head. This period of recurrent attacks may extend for several weeks or months, and a period of remission occurs once the headache subsides. Cluster headache may last anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours, and they may happen every day. These attacks usually happen at night after a 1- to 2-hour nap and frequently happen at the same time every day. There are several risk factors for this illness, including sex age smoking alcohol consumption, and family history.
Cause:
Cluster headaches begin with activating the hypothalamus, a gland located at the base of the brain that regulates your circadian rhythm and sleep-wake cycles (internal clock). Cluster headaches may be caused by activation of the trigeminal-autonomic reflex (perhaps through a link with the hypothalamus). The complex nerve pathway that links the trigeminal nerve to cranial nerves seven (the facial nerve) and eight (the vestibulocochlear nerve) is known as the trigeminal-autonomic reflex. These nerves carry parasympathetic signals to structures within the head, such as the tear glands, eyes, and nose. The pain is caused by the widening of blood vessels in the brain and face which puts pressure on the trigeminal nerve.Hypothalamus may trigger the release of chemicals like histamine or serotonin which affect the blood vessels.Cluster headaches can be triggered by various factors such as alcohol smoking bright light heat altitude or even certain smells like perfume or paint.
Symptom:
Symptoms may vary from person to person and not all symptoms are present in every other person: One-sided pain restlessness excessive tearing redness of your eye on the pompous side stuffy or runny nose on the affected side forehead or facial sweating on the affected side pale skin (pallor) or flushing on your face swelling around your eye on the affected side droping eyelid on the affected side.
