It is a group of rare eye diseases that affect the retina. RP makes cells in the retina break down slowly over time, causing vision loss.

Overview


Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited retinal disorders causing progressive rod photoreceptor dysfunction, cone photoreceptor degeneration, and retinal pigment epithelium degeneration, resulting in visual impairment that usually manifests as night blindness and progressive visual field loss.

Symptoms


Retinitis pigmentosa typically begins in childhood with a loss of night vision and side vision. Over time, the field of vision narrows, resulting in tunnel vision. Other symptoms include sensitivity to bright light and loss of color vision. Most individuals lose both visions.
