Moxibustion

Naturopathy

Traditional Chinese medicine practice known as "moxibustion" involves applying dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) to specific body points and burning it.The glowing end of the moxa stick is held an inch or two above the skin's surface until the area turns red and becomes heated.

Moxibustion promotes blood circulation and Qi flow. Moxibustion therapy is frequently used to treat digestive issues, arthritis pain, and issues warding off colds and the flu. Moxa heat eliminates cold and moisture, which lessens pain.

How does a person feel?

Patients receiving moxibustion frequently experience a sudden flood of warmth that swiftly radiates along a specific pathway (typically correlating with the jing luo channel being treated) away from the application site. This is a positive finding since it denotes the arrival of Qi and frees up the flow of Qi and xue in the channel.

How does moxibustion work?

Heat therapy: The heat from the burning mugwort is believed to stimulate blood flow and improve circulation.

Acupuncture points: By targeting specific acupuncture points, moxibustion influences the body's energy flow (qi).

Warmth and relaxation: The warmth from the burning mugwort also promotes relaxation,  reduces stress, and induces deep sleep.

Potential benefits of moxibustion

Pain relief: May help alleviate pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and menstrual cramps.

Improved circulation: This can stimulate blood flow and improve overall circulation.

Strengthening the body: Believed to strengthen the body's vital energy (qi) and improve overall health.

Promoting warmth: Often used to treat conditions associated with coldness or deficiency of yang energy.

Types of moxibustion

Direct moxibustion: The mugwort is placed directly on the skin, often covered by a slice of ginger to protect the skin.

Indirect moxibustion: The mugwort is placed on a metal cone or tube, which is then placed on the skin.

Standing moxibustion: The mugwort is suspended above the body, often used to treat conditions related to the lower abdomen or feet.

It's important to note

Professional treatment: Moxibustion is best performed by a trained practitioner to ensure proper technique and safety.

Individual results may vary: The benefits of moxibustion can vary from person to person.

Not a substitute for medical treatment: Moxibustion should not be used as a replacement for conventional medical care.
