Atrophic rhinitis is characterised with chronic inflammation of nasal cavity with atrophy (diminution) of nasal mucosa & turbinates( small structures inside the nose which cleanse & humidifies the air we breathe). Atrophy of turbinate provides more space in the nasal cavity. Chronic inflammation of nasal cavity causes damage to the ciliated epithelium of nose thereby causing stagnation of mucus discharge resulting in secondary infection & foul smelling nose. There is more evaporation of nasal fluid & atrophy of glands, veins, arteries, & nerve elements of nose. It’s of two types primary & secondary.

Ayurveda Treatment

Ayurveda mentions nasagata rogas (diseases pertaining to the nose), among them poothi nasya, apeenasa & dushtaprathisyaya are having clinical features similar to atrophic rhinitis.

Apeenasa is characterised by nasal obstruction,dry/wet nose, absence of smell & taste sensation, noisy breathing & thick yellowish nasal discharge. The feature of poothinasa is foul smelling nose & mouth. In dushta prathisyaya sometimes nose will be obstructed, sometimes open,it may be dry or wet associated with anosmia (loss of smell). These diseases can be co-related with atrophic rhinitis.

Treatment-Ayurveda approach

The treatment of Atrophic rhinitis aims at clearing the nasal passage, addressing the foul smell, clearing the discharges & rejuvenating the nasal mucosa so as to make it capable of smell perception. For nasal diseases Nasya (instillation of medicines into the nostrils) is the best treatment as it expels the doshas. After giving sneha, sweda (oleation & fomentation) nasya can be done with appropriate medication.Dhumapana (inhalation of medicated smoke) using suppositories made from medicinal drugs is very effective in clearing the nasal obstruction. Internally deepana pachana oushadhis (medicines that improve digestion) would be administered. In the final stage of treatment medicines to rejuvenate the atrophied nasal mucosa can be given.
